Does That Same Old Star?

Autie Em pointed out that she "missed" me since I have been MIA in blogland lately. It prompted me to remember what I wanted to talk about--things I miss that I didn't even realize I missed.

While Nimrod and I were hunting-I promise, no more hunting stories-we were out really early in the morning and really late at night. While we were riding along and I had nothing better to do, I started looking around, mostly up. WOW!! I forgot how many stars there are in the sky. I saw the Milky Way again, which I didn't even know I wasn't seeing anymore. I had forgotten that it should be bright in the sky for all to see along with all the constellations whose names I can't remember. Nimrod and I talked about when we were growing up how there were so many stars then. It never occurred to us that we wouldn't see them anymore. We don't live in the city and think we have pretty great visibility of the stars, but not like it was. We were saddened by the fact that our kids don't get to see the same awesomeness of the stars that we took for granted. To quote a country song, "Does that same old star still shine where you are?" Sadly, no. But, I determined to get our kids out and see God's greatness in the sky. I encourage you to do the same thing, whether you have kids or not. Go some place where there are too many to even fathom that there could be that many.

Another thing I miss, fruit pies. My dad used to buy them for like $.10 a piece or something really cheap. We ate them in our lunches every day. Snackshack pulled out some while we were taking one of our many snack breaks. I forgot how much I loved fruit pies. I probably would have eaten all that Snackshack had brought but that wouldn't have been very polite. Now they are like $1.79 a piece or something outrageous. AND, I would never let my kids have them for lunch everyday, but don't tell them that.

On the way home from work today I realized how much I miss interacting with and teaching teenagers. I have a great group of kids working hard and when they earn that credit they realize their hard work is worth it. I also got to talk with a kid about making better choices and making a life different than his siblings. He wants more from life than what he has seen. Helping the students, academically or with life choices, is something I didn't know I missed until I started doing it again. No, I don't want to back into teaching full-time, I would miss out on the REALLY important things in my life like my kids and the things important to them. I do, however, like this little niche I am filling for our district and will enjoy it as long as I can. Finally, something I miss that I can have back without all the calories :)

Have you pondered about what you are missing that you didn't know?
